01 Welcome

Ethiopia's crossroads city, at an easy pace.

Dire Dawa grew up around a railway station and never lost the habit of arrivals. East Star Hotel sits in that rhythm: 51 rooms, a quiet pool terrace, and a kitchen that runs from early Ethiopian breakfasts to late à la carte.

Whether you're in town for two nights of business, breaking a Djibouti corridor drive, or using the city as a base for Harar and the Porc-Epic caves, the desk is staffed around the clock and the shuttle meets flights.

  • Air-conditioned rooms with private bathrooms and flat-screen TVs
  • Free Wi-Fi throughout, and free private parking on site
  • Buffet breakfast included with every stay
  • 24-hour front desk, room service and airport shuttle

04 Dining

Breakfast at six. Kitfo at ten. Coffee in between.

The restaurant opens early for the buffet — firfir, ful, eggs, fresh bread, fruit and Ethiopian coffee — then carries on through a menu that moves between national dishes and straightforward international plates.

Ask for the coffee ceremony in the afternoon; it takes half an hour and it is the correct way to end a day in Dire Dawa.

06 Getting here

The line that made the city.

Dire Dawa exists because the Addis Ababa–Djibouti railway stopped here in 1902. It is still the middle of the corridor — and still the easiest place to break the journey.
